Things to Do In Rotterdam | The Netherlands Outside of Amsterdam

Amsterdam tends to dominate the conversation when it comes to visiting the Netherlands, but there is plenty more to see elsewhere in the country. Rotterdam makes an excellent alternative, and these are some of the highlights worth seeking out. ## The Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen) You have almost certainly seen photographs of these before, and they are just as striking in person. It is not only the famous row of tilted cubes you can admire: you can walk into the small courtyards between them, wander around and take photos. They sit a three-minute walk from the station and are well worth a visit. ## The Market Hall (Markthal) This eye-catching building is impossible to miss and is also a short walk from the train station. Relatively new, it combines apartments and offices, with a food market beneath the giant dome. Take a moment to look away from the stalls and admire the ceiling. A fresh stroopwafel, a Dutch flat waffle and a perennial favourite, is a must if you can manage it. There is plenty of choice for everyone: bread, cheese, nuts, chocolate and more. ## Erasmus Bridge (Erasmusbrug) There is not much to say about this one beyond the fact that it looks rather beautiful, and that it serves as the gateway to the next few recommendations. Walk across it and follow the water down to reach the following spots. ## Hotel New York This hotel occupies the former office building of the Holland America Line, which means it is where many people once departed Rotterdam by boat for America. It is a beautiful building inside and out, and it is worth popping in for a drink. A coffee or a cocktail should serve you well. ## Fenix Food Factory Directly across from Hotel New York is a place that feels like a little slice of London or Brooklyn transplanted into Rotterdam. Places like this have been springing up across the Netherlands in recent years, and Fenix Food Factory is the perfect spot for a break. Browse the different food stalls inside, pick up a sandwich, a beer and a cheese platter, and enjoy it all out in the sun. ## SS Rotterdam The SS Rotterdam is conveniently located just a few minutes from the Fenix Food Factory. Known as ‘The Grand Dame’, it is a former ocean liner completed in 1959 and now serves as a hotel boat. Entry to look around the vast ship is free, so you can wander the decks and imagine yourself in a scene from Titanic. There is also the chance to grab a drink on the main deck, or simply walk up and take a peek. Many of these recommendations are well known, but Rotterdam rewards a return visit for anyone wanting to explore further and find more cafes and sights worth their time.
